The budget you have will determine the type of digital camera to buy. There are two major types of digital cameras on the market today: the cheaper Point and Shoot digital cameras (P&S cameras), and the more expensive DSLR cameras.

Point & Shoot Camera

A Point and Shoot digital camera is the most popular because it’s much less intimidating. It’s also quite tiny in size, weighs very little, and can be purchased for less than $100. These make P&S cameras quite popular with general consumers and hobbyists.

One other reason they’re so popular is the ease of use. In most cases you simply turn the camera on, point it at whatever you plan to take a picture of, and push the button.

Now, many P&S cameras today have much more advanced features too, but these also tend to be very easy to use. And you don’t have to use the advanced features unless you’d like to, so they’re still quite friendly to complete beginners while offering some more advanced functionality to those who would like to do a little more.

A common advanced feature of P&S cameras is the zoom functionality. Another is referred to as “modes”. Modes are indicated by little pictures on a dial of the camera, and they allow you to set the camera up for a specific type of picture taking. If you’re taking pictures of your child’s football game for instance, you might change the mode dial on your camera to the little running man picture. This means the camera is now configured better for the faster pace needed when taking sports pictures.

DSLR Camera

A DSLR Camera is much more powerful and advanced, but it can seem a bit more intimidating or difficult to use. Many DSLRs are being made with ease of use in mind though. They have a “mode” dial on them like the P&S cameras do for instance, so that the user can simply turn the dial and take a picture without fiddling with many different settings.

Why Choose a DSLR?

DSLR cameras have become much more popular in the past year or two. You can get a entry level DSLR for less than $500. Nikon and Canon DSLR are the two most popular brands of DSLR, for hobbyists and professional photographers.

One main reason to choose a DSLR is that you can change the camera lens anytime you’d like.

Other the other hand, a P&S camera has a built in lens that cannot be changed. And even though the P&S may have zoom functions, it’s limited to specific ranges only.

A DSLR allows you to put a different lens on when you want to. If for instance, you want to take a sweeping scenic picture, you might use a wide angle lens. But to get a really good close up shot of that deer off in the distance, you can attach a longer, telephoto lens and get up nice and close with your picture while still standing in the same spot.

The other reason to choose a DSLR is the image sensor. DSLR has a larger size image sensor than a P&S. With a large sensor, you get better image quality even in low light condition.

I thought this woman with a fiery red chilli photo would look great as a header graphic for this blog.

What do you think?
